The Sacraments
A Sacrament is God’s love expressed as a free, undeserved gift. God uses visible signs to communicate invisible love. The Church witnesses to and celebrates the sacraments.
A sacrament is a powerful sign that God is alive and present in the world. At Church, we are called to be sacrament, that is to be God’s hand and healing touch in the world. At the same time, we celebrate the sacraments as our most important prayer. This Church that celebrates sacraments is global, reaching to other faith communities throughout the world and joined in a common bond. The Church is also local as a diocese or archdiocese, as a parish and as a community of faith in families. The Love of God has been poured into our hearts by His Spirit living in us.

Holy Orders
Holy Orders is the sacrament by which people called by God are ordained for ministry in the Church to serve God and all of God’s people. It is called Holy Orders, in the plural, because there are three different ministries, or orders: episkopos (bishop), presbyter (priest), and diakonos (deacon).
There are two kinds of deacons, permanent deacons and transitional deacons. The transitional deacon is a man who either has completed or is completing his seminary training and intends to be ordained a priest. A permanent deacon is a man who may be married who has discerned that he wants to serve as an ordained minister in the Church; however, he does not intend to become a priest but he takes a vow not to remarry once his spouse dies. Deacons proclaim the Gospel and preach homilies, witness marriages, baptize, and assist the priest in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. He is also assigned by the bishop to a pastoral care ministry, such as to a hospital, prison, hospice, Life Support Center, etc.
You may find more information about becoming a priest of the Diocese of Colorado Springs, how to become a permanent deacon in this diocese, or more about other religious communities serving in the Diocese of Colorado Springs at their web page.

Anointing of the Sick
The sacrament of anointing is for Christians whose health (physical, spiritual, or emotional) is seriously impaired by sickness or old age. In the past, people were in the custom of waiting to receive this sacrament until they were close to death. Although one may receive the sacrament as they near death, they should not wait to receive it. In fact, it can be better to be anointed at the beginning of serious illness while the sick person is still capable of active participation in the ritual. This sacrament may be repeated if a person recovers and then becomes ill again; when the illness becomes more serious; or if the person is chronically ill. Please contact the parish office for more information. 719-633-1457 ext 210.
